Shipping Container Inspection Checklist for Delivery Day

When your container arrives, take ten minutes to inspect it before you sign the delivery paperwork. It is much easier to sort out a problem while the driver is still there. Print this checklist or keep it open on your phone.

Before the container is unloaded

  • Check that the size and type match your order, for example 20ft standard or 40ft high cube.
  • Confirm which way the doors should face before the driver places it.
  • Make sure the placement spot is the one you agreed and is level.

Outside

  • Walls: dents are normal on used containers, but look for holes, cracks or rust that goes all the way through the steel.
  • Roof: if you can see it safely, check for holes, deep rust or standing water in dents.
  • Frame and corners: corner posts and top and bottom rails should be straight. Bent corners can stop the doors sealing.
  • Condition: paint and markings should match the condition you ordered (new, refurbished or used).

Doors

  • Open and close both doors fully. They should move without excessive force once the container is level.
  • Work every locking bar and handle.
  • Check that the rubber door gaskets are complete, not torn or missing.
  • Look for the lock box if your container has one.

Inside

  • Light test: step inside and have someone close the doors. Any daylight showing through the roof or walls means a hole.
  • Floor: walk the full length. The plywood should feel solid, without soft spots, large holes or loose boards.
  • Smell and dampness: note any strong odors or wet patches.
